An epidemiologist has warned that falling sperm counts are a threat to human survival and has done a study to back up the claim. Dr. Shanna Swan— an expert in fertility at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York gave her take on the matter in her new book ‘Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race.'
The book finds Swan speaking on possible things that are a threat to sperm count, including the climate crisis. A part of her book says, “The current state of reproductive affairs can’t continue much longer without threatening human survival.” Swan also says by 2050, a large portion of the population won’t be able to conceive without some type of technological assistance due to the decline in sperm count.
Swan also said that a driver in declining sperm count may stem from a household chemical called phthalates. The chemical is reportedly found in plastics, and is used to make the plastic harder to break and more flexible. This same chemical can be found in soaps, lotion, shampoo, plastic film packaging, and more.
