Health officials in Norway are warning terminally ill patients and those over 80 about taking the COVID-19 vaccine after 23 people died shortly after taking the first round of the vaccine.

All the fatalities occurred among patients in nursing homes who were well over the age of 80. Out of the 23 who died, 13 people have been autopsied, which revealed that reactions to the vaccine, including fever and nausea, "may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients," according to Sigurd Hortemo, the chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency.

Steinar Madsen, medical director with the agency, also addressed the deaths, telling Norwegian broadcaster NRK, "We are not alarmed by this. It is quite clear that these vaccines have very little risk, with a small exception for the frailest patients. Doctors must now carefully consider who should be vaccinated. Those who are very frail and at the very end of life can be vaccinated after an individual assessment."
