Dr. Tom Stewart lost his role as an Ontario COVID-19 advisory board member after traveling to the Caribbean for vacation.

Stewart, who's also the CEO of St. Joseph's Health System and Niagra Health, publicly apologized after it was confirmed on Tuesday that he traveled to the Dominican Republic despite the Ontario government advising against non-essential travel.

"I regret this non-essential travel and I'm sorry," Stewart said. "I recognize everyone should be avoiding non-essential travel now, including me. As a health system leader, my actions in no way reflect the tireless dedication and commitment of the staff at St. Joseph's Health System, who continue to live the legacy of our organization every day."

He has stepped down as a member of a number of health advisory boards, including the Health Coordination Table, the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, and the LTC Incident Management System Table.
