The Chief Scientific Adviser for Operation Warp Speed, a U.S. government initiation to facilitate and accelerate the development, manufacturing, and distribution of COVID-19 countermeasures, said that Pfizer-BioNTech's coronavirus vaccine is causing more allergic reactions than expected.

Dr. Moncef Slaoui claimed he was updated on six cases of allergic reactions to the vaccine on Tuesday and said the frequency "is superior to what one would expect with other vaccines." He also pointed out that the data on COVID-19 immunizations is lagging behind the true numbers.

According to Dr. Slaoui, vaccine manufacturers and the National Institutes of Health are engaging in discussions to consider holding clinical trials in very allergic populations. He stated that the trial could help understand the rate of allergic reactions and what is provoking them.

Recently, the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research held a meeting to discuss the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, including a trial where four cases of Bell's palsy were reported among the vaccinated group and none among the placebo group. After looking at the findings, the FDA stated there was "no clear basis upon which to conclude a causal relationship" between the vaccine and the occurrence of Bell's palsy.
