Just ahead of the Christmas holiday, President Donald Trump has issued a series of pardons and commutations of sentences. In total, Trump's Executive Grants of Clemency consisted of 15 individuals and commuted part or all of the sentences of an additional 5 individuals. According to CNBC, among those pardoned or had their sentences commuted include "two men convicted as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and four former Blackwater USA guards who were convicted in the killings of 14 unarmed Iraqi civilians in Baghdad in 2007."
Two other former GOP congressmen who were convicted of financial-related crimes also received pardons. In addition to pardoning individuals with ties to the political sphere, Trump also intervened in the cases of those impacted by mandatory minimum sentences which are often blamed for the rapid growth in the U.S. prison population over the last few decades.
