According to the New York Times, Cleveland is planning to drop "Indians" from their Major League Baseball team after dropping their mascot, Chief Wahoo, in 2018.
Three sources close to the situation opened up to the Times about the decision, with two of them revealing that Cleveland is planning to follow the Washington Football Team of the N.F.L. by moving forward without a replacement name and letting the public decide on a new name in the future. One source also added that Cleveland plans to keep the Indians name and uniforms for the 2021 season and transitioning to a new name as early as 2022. The move to a new name will involve various logistical considerations, including working with uniform manufacturers and companies that make the team equipment and stadium signage.
This comes after years of protests from fans and Native American groups who say using Indigenous names, mascots and imagery for sports teams is racist and demeaning. President Trump criticized the decision, writing on Twitter, "Oh no! What is going on? This is not good news, even for 'Indians.' Cancel culture at work!"
