A$AP Rocky released a new song on Thursday as part of the soundtrack to the highly-anticipated video game, Cyberpunk 2077.
The untitled song, found on The Dirge radio station within the game, features the rapper rhyming about drugs, fashion, and riches. However, the new track finds Rocky touching on colorism which is a topic he's been criticized for in the past.
"When I was younger, man I wished that I was light-skinned/Now I wouldn't trade the world for my skin," Rocky said. "I surpassed what you could do inside your lifespan/So just give me a little credit like a White man."
In the past, A$AP Rocky has received backlash for his comments about Black women and Black Lives Matter. In 2013, he stated dark-skinned women shouldn't wear red lipstick. Then in 2015, he was criticized for his comments about the Black Lives Matter protests in Ferguson.
"So every time something happens because I'm Black I gotta stand up? Who the f*** am I, Al Sharpton now? I'm A$AP Rocky," he said in 2015. "I did not sign up to be no political activist...I don't wanna talk about no f****** Ferguson and s*** because I don't live over there! I live in f****** Soho and Beverly Hills. I can't relate."
Earlier this year, Rocky cleared up his comments during an interview with Kerwin Frost.
"What I will say though is in those old interviews I used to say I think it's inappropriate for me to rap about things I didn't help with," Rocky stated. "I felt like when it came to Ferguson, J. Cole went down there and he actually was on the news and he helped. I felt like he deserved to rap about it. So when someone asked me that in 2015 I'm like: 'I just feel, personally, if I'm in SoHo or I'm here I can't even talk on that...That's appropriating. ...It's not sincere. It's pretentious."
