As British drugmaker AstraZeneca ramps up to release their COVID-19 vaccine, sources told Reuters that the company was targeted by suspected North Korean hackers in recent months.
The hackers tried to gain access to AstraZeneca's system by posing as job recruiters offering positions to employees at the company. The job descriptions were embedded with malicious code designed to gain access to a victim’s computer. However, the attempts are not thought to have been successful.
One source stated that some of the accounts used in the attacks on the company were registered to Russian email addresses, which they believe was a possible attempt to mislead investigators. It was also revealed that the tools and techniques used in the attacks used in the recent event connected them to an ongoing hacking campaign that U.S. officials and cybersecurity researchers have linked to North Korea.
