Previously, Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was convicted and given a life sentence plus 30 years after being found guilty of running a drug trafficking empire. Now, El Chapo is reportedly appealing the life sentence and is claiming that his trial was unfair.

El Chapo’s lawyer Marc Fernich filed paperwork this past Friday, a year after Guzman was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years. The appeal was reportedly 250 pages, and found Fernich saying, “Chapo Guzman’s prosecution was marred by rampant excess and overreach, both governmental and judicial.”

Along with that claim, the appeal said that one of El Chapo’s lawyers had a conflict of interest and that jurors allegedly violated orders not to read social media posts or news related to the trial and El Chapo. Documents filed asked that the court appoint a different judge to consider El Chapo’s appeal as well as look into accusations that the government mishandled the case.
