Update 08/13/2020 11:12pm:

Lauryn Hill penned a lengthy response to her daughter Selah about the discipline she dished out as a mother. "Selah has every right to express herself, I encourage it, but she also got the discipline that black children get because we are held to a different standard," wrote Hill. "The discipline was seen through the lens of a young child who also had no place to reconcile me as mom, and me as a larger than life public figure. It took me a while to realize that my children, and probably everyone who knew me saw me in this duality. To me, I am just me. If I am guilty of anything it is disciplining in anger, not in disciplining."

She continued, "My life has been about protecting my children from all kinds of danger, and that's only possible when you protect yourself from the danger as well." Hill also addressed the criticism she received following Selah's graphic retelling, "We're both learning and healing, and each of my children has a similar story and journey. All of you in a rush to crucify someone, careful who you string up or nail up. You might have an extremely limited view of the actual reality," adding, "We all hate abuse and exploitation, sometimes in an effort to fight against it we can easily become the abuser, the exploiter, and THIS is what we have to watch for. No one is exempt from needing to watch themselves in this way."

Update 08/12/2020 3:02pm:

Earlier this week Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley's daughter, Selah, opened up about her childhood trauma and the effects that her parents' arguments had on her. Selah also spoke about her father's absence and her mother's disciplinary measures.

In response to his daughter's Instagram Live session, Rohan Marley has released a statement expressing his support.

"Selah's expression on Instagram is a healing process for her," Marley said. "I'm very happy that she is fearless in her expression. I love her very much and do apologize for any contributions I may have added by arguing in front of her as a child. I've grown as a man, a spiritual being, and a father. I am constantly growing and will teach my children to always take the higher road in any disagreements. I will be there for her no matter how many hours, days, months, or years it will take. I will be the best Dad that I can be. One Love."

Lauryn Hill has not responded publicly to her daughter's comments.

On Monday, Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley's daughter Selah opened up about her relationship with her parents. During her two-hour Instagram LiveSelah revealed the trauma she endured growing up with a father who wasn't around and a mother who used spankings as a way of discipline.

"Honestly guys, I'm just hurting. I can't even front that I'm not," she said. "I've been hurting for so much of my life and so much of my life has been me avoiding how much I'm really hurting just from the circumstances."

Selah referred to her mother as "an amazing woman" but also angry.

"She would spank us to no avail," Selah said. "She was just very angry. So, so, so, so, so, so angry. She was literally not easy to talk to and then half the time we didn't live with her. I lived with my grandparents half the time."

She admitted that the physical discipline calmed down once she became a teenager and is proud of the changes her mother has made over the years. But, the 21-year-old also addressed how witnessing her mother and father's arguments impacted the way she handles relationships before highlighting her father's absence.

"And then it clicked again and I was like, 'Wow, where is my father? Like where is my father?'" Selah continued. "And I just came to [the] conclusion of how much of my life I've f***** up and how much of me is f***** up simply because my dad just wasn't around. And like, there's just a void where there should be a person and it's honestly really hard."

Neither Rohan Marley nor Lauryn Hill has commented on Selah's remarks.
