According to reports, students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, have contracted COVID-19 after attending "COVID parties" as part of a larger contest to see who catches the coronavirus first with the winner to be awarded a cash prize. Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry told reporters, "They put money in a pot and they try to get COVID. Whoever gets COVID first gets the pot," adding, "It makes no sense. They're intentionally doing it."

While addressing the Tuscaloosa City Council earlier this week, Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith stated, "We thought that was kind of a rumor at first," adding, "We did some research. Not only do the doctors' offices confirm it but the state confirmed they also had the same information."
