A convenience store in Kentucky got national attention after their new signage went viral. Alvin’s in Manchester, KY sported a new sign that told potential patrons to leave their masks behind while also flouting the authority of Governor Andy Beshear with regard to mitigating the spread of COVID-19. The sign read: "No masks allowed in-store" “Lower your mask or go somewhere else! Stop listening to Beshear. He’s a dumba**.”

One local man saw the sign and shared a picture on Facebook to "spread their shame." The post was shared thousands of times and elicited mixed responses from those condemning the sign and others called it a "patriotic statement."

“We are not telling you to not wear a mask,” Alvin's said in a statement issued via Facebook on Tuesday. “What we are saying is, [it’s] your choice to wear one or not, not our [government’s] choice for us. While some got the meaning behind it, [a lot] did not.” The store said they were not intending to offend anyone with the sign “[b]ut we will not apologize for our beliefs in our freedom to make our own decisions, that our government wants to make for us,” adding, “We strive to keep our customers safe, and our employees.”
