Donald Trump streamlined news of his latest executive order by announcing on Twitter his intent to temporarily suspend immigration to the United States amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!," wrote the president.

The Trump administration had previously suspended inbound flights from Europe as America rapidly became the epicenter of the pandemic. It's not immediately clear exactly how Trump plans to approach the immigration suspension nor is it understood just how long the hold will last.

For immigration advocates, however, this becomes an opportunity for the Trump administration to implement some of its more restrictionist policies with regard to immigration. Ali Noorani of the National Immigration Forum responded to Trump's tweet saying, "This is not about the policy. It is about the message the president wants to send. He wants people to turn against 'the other.' And, regardless of the valuable contributions, immigrants are making to the response and recovery, he sees immigrants as the easiest to blame."
