Update 04/14/2020 11:39pm:

According to TMZ, YNW Melly won't be a free man anytime soon despite contracting the coronavirus while in jail. The Florida rapper's release request was denied and he will remain in Broward County Jail until he faces trial. Despite his attorney filing paperwork claiming Melly's condition was worsening as he labors to breathe and suffers through head and body aches. But the presiding judge ruled that Melly can seek proper medical attention while remaining in custody.

This is welcomed news for the families of Melly's alleged victims as they sought to halt the rapper's release. Citing the potential threat he posed to their immediate safety, the families of Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams noted that the nature of Melly's crime didn't warrant a release despite contracting the potentially deadly virus.

After testing positive for COVID-19, YNW Melly requested to be released from jail as he awaits trial for double-murder and so that he can receive the proper medical treatment to combat the virus. However, the families of Melly's alleged victims are not looking forward to his release and are asking that the rapper remain locked up despite his poor health.

Attorney John Phillips, representing the family of Christopher Thomas Jr., said in a statement: "A civil suit will soon be filed against a host of Defendants, including Mr. Demons (a.k.a. Melly). However, we are choosing to be the first firm to elect to pursue all of the victim’s rights under Marsy’s Law, an Amendment to the Florida Constitution voted in by voters in 2018, [...] We know of no other firm in Florida which as sought to use Marsy’s law to its fullest benefit and are proud Christopher Thomas’s family will be the first. We will seek to attend and be heard at depositions, advocate for victims at each step and make sure justice is fair, firm and full. [...] We oppose the release of Jamell Demons (YNW Melly), as is explained in the Motion. We again ask the public to be sensitive of the victims here. They lost children."

The family of Melly's other alleged victim, Anthony Williams, is also against his emergency release request. The Williams family legal representative told TMZ, "While our firm and the family of Anthony Williams' sympathize with anyone affected by COVID-19, we do not believe this justifies pretrial release," adding, "He needs to remain in custody until a jury decides his fate."
