Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders announced on Wednesday (April 8) that he was suspending his presidential campaign. This will set up a general election between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Sanders told his staff in a conference call that path to winning the Democratic presidential nomination is "virtually impossible" after a series of crushing primary losses. Citing the coronavirus pandemic, Sanders added, "I cannot in good conscience continue to mount a campaign that cannot win and which would interfere with the important work required of all of us in this difficult hour."

Sanders congratulated Biden, but didn't directly endorse him, stating that Biden is "a very decent man who I will work with to move our progressive ideas forward."
