Reports surfaced noting that Delta Airlines was fined $50,000 for two cases of discrimination that took place on their airline against Muslim passengers. Both of the incidents reportedly occurred in 2016.
One situation went down in July 2016 in Paris, while a Muslim couple was trying to make their way back to Cincinnati, Ohio. A passenger reported the couple to a flight attendant for making her nervous, saying the Muslim woman’s headscarf was a trigger. The flight attendant passed the man and noticed he was repeatedly texting “Allah,” which caused her to get suspicious. From there, Delta security officers interviewed the couple outside of the plane and said there were no red flags, and they were clear to fly, but the captain would not allow them back on the plane. The Department of Transportation said, “It appears that but for Mr. and Mrs. X's perceived religion, Delta would not have removed or denied them re-boarding.”
Another incident went down in Amsterdam, where another captain went to the gate to have a Muslim man removed, and the area searched around his seat. Because of these two incidents, the U.S. Department of Transportation hit Delta with a fine of $50,000 for violating their anti-bias law.
