Amazon is under fire after its facial recognition software falsely matched photos of professional athletes in New England with mugshots.

The ACLU reported the issue and said they used 188 headshots of players from the Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots. The results found the software falsely matching 27 athletes to a database of 20,000. The ACLU said, “There is no regulation or oversight or transparency at all required by state law with respect to how government agencies use these tools. We want people to know that this is dangerous stuff. You could be falsely ID’d.”

Duron Harmon, a safety for the Patriots, was falsely matched by the software and spoke on the matter, saying, “This technology is flawed. If it misidentified me, my teammates, and other professional athletes in an experiment, imagine the real-life impact of false matches.”
