John Wall was highly touted coming out of high school and further raised his NBA stock after a year at the University of Kentucky. Since entering the league, Wall has been an All-Star and the marquee name on the Washington Wizards' roster (alongside Bradley Beal). However, a few unsuccessful postseason appearances and a series of injuries has left Wall with many doubters and detractors. To compound the negative chatter, the criticism levied against him reached its height after he signed a massive four year $171 million supermax extension with the Wizards.
Despite John Wall having five All-Star appearances with career averages of 20.7 points and 8.7 assists, many NBA fans and analysts have begun calling his contract the worst in league history. In a recent interview with The Athletic, John Wall opened up about the criticism, remarking, "The only thing I questioned was 'the worst contract in NBA history." Wall continued, "That was my lowest point because I was like do I really deserve this money? Did I really earn it?" After questioning himself, Wall flipped the criticism into motivation. "To say I have the worst contract in NBA history, that's all I needed, [...] The ones that doubted me on the highest level I don't speak to because I know my game will do the talking when I get back to playing."
