During a Twitter Q&A session with When They See Us director Ava DuVernay, she revealed the heartbreaking reason why Korey Wise didn't reunite with his girlfriend Lisa after being released from prison and exonerated of his charges.
She told a Twitter user who questioned the situation, "I’m sorry. Korey never reconnected with his girlfriend from the time of his arrest. Sadly, she passed away before he was released from prison 13 years later. Whenever Korey mentions Lisa to this day, he always adds 'Rest in Peace.' I truly hope she is. #WhenTheySeeUs."
This comes after DuVernay recently posted a heartfelt message to Wise on his birthday, writing, "Today is the day that a king was born. His power is his survival. His strength is his sword. He defeats darkness daily. He endures. He inspires. Saluting you today, @KoreyKingWise. I celebrate your life and thank you for letting me be a part of it. Happy Birthday, brother."
