According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Police Department had an open investigation on the late rapper Nipsey Hussle. The New York Times reports that the LAPD was looking into the rapper's gang ties and whether or not his Marathon Store was a hub for illegal gang activity. At one point during the investigation, police reportedly pressured the former owners of the strip mall that houses the Marathon Store to evict the rapper.

However, the property was eventually sold to Nipsey and his brother for $2.5 million according to public records. The revelation of this investigation undermines the police department's seemingly uncharacteristic embrace of the now-deceased member of the Rollin 60s Crips. It will all but sour what semblance of a rapport had been established between the LAPD and the larger South (Central) Los Angeles community in wake of Nipsey's untimely death.
