While becoming the 11th state to legalize marijuana, Illinois is at the forefront in terms of state-wide implementation of the process which covers consumers, state tax base, and now Illinois is addressing the criminal justice issues that stem from nonviolent marijuana arrests.

According to the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which will go into effect in 2020, is expunging the records of some 770,000 people who were convicted of marijuana-related offenses of 30 grams or less. Those convicted of crimes with between 30 and 500 grams will need to petition in order to have the court lift that conviction.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker told the Associated Press, "The war on cannabis has destroyed families, filled prisons with nonviolent offenders, and disproportionately disrupted black and brown communities," adding, "Law enforcement across the nation has spent billions of dollars to enforce the criminalization of cannabis, yet its consumption remains widespread."
