Judge Mathis had a very strong reaction to the miniseries When They See Us, about the miscarriage of justice for the Central Park 5. Mathis shared a selfie where he appears to have been crying over the film and was adamant on those who hadn't seen it, to take the time to watch. He wrote on IG:
"Just finished watching “WHEN THEY SEE US“ - the Netflix true to life miniseries about five Black & Latino Youth who were wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman after being forced to confess to a crime they DID NOT commit. The innocent teenagers served several years in prison before they were freed and exonerated. Don’t miss this story of the “ Central Park Five”. FIGHT THE POWER."
