After being shot on Sunday (June 9) at a club in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, former baseball star David "Big Papi" Ortiz was cleared by his surgeon to be transported on a plane to Boston sent by the Red Sox. Ortiz's surgeon, Dr. Abel Gonzalez, told ESPN, "The level of stability that Big Papi is showing at this moment makes it possible for him to travel immediately." 

Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy also commented on the situation, stating, "Right now, the club's exclusive focus is on David's health and well-being and we're doing everything we can to get David back to Boston as soon as possible." 

According to reports, Ortiz suffered liver damage after the attack and he was in surgery for six hours, where his gallbladder and parts of his colon and intestines were removed.
