A man living in Minnesota pleaded guilty to mail fraud after faking his death in order to collect a $2 million insurance payout. Igor Vorotinov, 54, took out a policy with Mutual of Omaha in March 2010 and named his wife, Irinia Vorotoniv, as the primary beneficiary of the policy. After setting up the insurance policy, Igor left for his native Moldova.
In 2011, police in Moldova found a body on the side of the road which was later identified as Igor Vorotinov. His wife flew out to Moldova to make a positive ID on the body which was later cremated. Irinia later claimed the $2,048,414.09 to her on March 23, 2012.
However, Vorotinov really moved to Transnistria (a region in Moldova) where he went by the name Nikoly Patoka from 2012 to November 2018. Authorities are now piecing together how members of the family were in on it from wife Irinia to the couple's son Alkon. According to the NY Daily News, "Alkon Vorotinov was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay restitution after pleading guilty to concealing a felony," while Irinia "was sentenced to 37 months in prison in 2016 after pleading guilty to both mail fraud and engaging in a monetary transaction in criminally derived property."
Igor Vorotinov is set to be sentenced in July.
