Barack Obama took to Twitter to pay tribute to John Singleton following the famed director's tragic death this week. Obama remembered Singleton's breakout film, Boyz n the Hood, and the doors that he opened for other filmmakers of color.

He wrote, "Condolences to the family of John Singleton. His seminal work, Boyz n the Hood, remains one of the most searing, loving portrayals of the challenges facing inner-city youth. He opened doors for filmmakers of color to tell powerful stories that have been too often ignored."

Obama was among many who remembered Singleton, including Regina King, who appeared in Boyz n the Hood. She wrote on Instagram, "Rest In Power, my friend. One of the greatest to ever do it. Thank you GOD for blessing us with this gift better known as John Singleton. Having trouble finding enough words to share just what you mean to me. Will always love you John! Your spirit will forever shine bright."
