According to People, police made a welfare check to Wendy Williams' home in January after someone called to claim that Williams' husband, Kevin Hunter, was poisoning her. This came months before Williams filed for divorce from Hunter amid news that he fathered a child with his mistress.

A police report revealed that Hunter opened the door of the New Jersey home he shared with Williams, but he was hesitant to let officers inside. However, Hunter let them in and they found Williams upstairs recovering from a broken shoulder and lying in bed. When asked if there was any truth to being poisoned, Williams reportedly "became tearful," but denied anything had occurred. The officers left the talk show host's home after she assured them that she was safe.
