Former DC cocaine kingpin Rayful Edmond III is seeking an early release from prison after nearly 30 years. Edmond, 54, was arrested in 1989 and was sentenced to life in 1990, and he continued to deal drugs from inside prison, leading to an additional 30-year sentence.

Edmond's attorney filed paperwork on Friday (April 19), which stated that reducing his sentence would send a message to the community that "cooperating with the government is more advantageous than engaging in crime."

In an unlikely move, The U.S. Attorney's Office in D.C. filed a motion to reduce Edmond's life sentence in February, stating that he has been cooperating with investigators to provide testimony and information in narcotics and homicide investigations from 1997 to 2014. Prosecutors added that Edmonds "made a significant contribution to the investigation and prosecution of others."

Edmond's attorney is asking for time served, which would mean he would be released immediately.
