According to reports, a fire caused the spire of the Notre Dame Cathedral to collapse.

As many as 400 firefighters rushed to put out the fire out. The collapse of the spire, which was immortalized by “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” found the Paris Fire Brigade trying to evacuate most of the artwork that was being housed in the cathedral. Commander General of the Paris Fire Brigade—Jean-Claude Gallet said “We need to win this battle and block the spreading of the flames. The most efficient action is from the inside. We are not sure if we will be able to stop the spreading of the flames to the North Tower.”

He continued “We are evacuating the most precious artwork that is being sheltered.”
