Following the devastation of three suspicious fires at historically black churches in Louisiana, the police have reportedly arrested the 21-year-old son of a Sheriff's Deputy in connection to the crimes.
It's been reported that Sheriff Deputy Roy Matthews himself turned in his son, Holden Matthews, to the authorities Wednesday (April 10) evening, where he was charged this morning with three counts of simple arson of a religious building.
The church burnings occurred in St. Landry Parish within 10 days of one another, with the first attack at St. Mary Baptist Church on March 26th, followed by the Greater Union Baptist on April 2nd and the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on April 4th.
The churches were empty at the time of each fire and no one was hurt, though the NAACP has described the attacks as "domestic terrorism" which targeted a community because of their skin color and faith.
Regarding the suspect, Matthews' social media reveals that he had an interest in black metal music and is the lead singer for a band called Vodka Vultures, while records show that he also lived in St. Landry Parish. With all that said, the police or the suspect's father have not yet revealed a motive.
Meanwhile, as the charges currently stand, the maximum penalty for each count is 15 years in prison.
