An NYPD detective was shot and killed by friendly fire on Tuesday night while responding to an attempted armed robbery. 42-year-old Det. Brian Simonsen was fatally shot in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens. Another NYPD officer was wounded during the incident and was rushed to the hospital along with Simonsen where he was pronounced dead. The robbery suspect, Christopher Ransom, 27, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Ransom was taken to the hospital where he will later be released into police custody.
