After news broke yesterday (Jan. 9) about Jeff Bezos impending divorce from his wife of 25 years, MacKenzie Bezos, it's now been confirmed that the couple married in 1993 without a prenuptial agreement.
That means in the state of Washington where there are "community property rules," couples without a prenup split assets down the middle, thus meaning the Amazon CEO's fortune of $137B could be cut directly in half with a 50/50 split.
It should also be noted, that the Bezos additionally own 400,000 acres of property, which makes them 2 of the biggest landholders in the United States. How all of that will be divided remains to be seen.
With all that said, the couple has stated that the divorce is amicable.
Following the news that Jeff Bezos is set to divorce his wife, MacKenzie, after 25 years of marriage, the couple has decided to release a public statement. Posted on social media, the text reads "we want to make people aware of a development in our lives. As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.
The statement goes on to say that "We've had such a great life as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures.
In conclusion, they added that "though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends.
Together they have four children, while reports suggest that they had no prenuptial agreement, leading many to speculate how much of his $137B the 'richest man in the world' will have to part ways with.
Although the founder, chairman, CEO, and president of Amazon is currently listed as the most wealthy man in the world, Jeff Bezos is reportedly set to lose a huge fraction of his fortune due to his impending divorce from his wife of 25 years.
Bezos issued a statement on their separation, saying that "we feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other." Bezos added that "if we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again." It's important to note that there was reportedly no prenuptial agreement.
Bezos has a current net worth of $137 billion (down from last year's $160 billion), while Amazon is the most valuable company in the world with a total worth of $810 billion.
