According to video footage caught by a black guest at a Doubletree hotel in Portland, he was kicked out of the hotel by staff for reportedly being on his cell phone.

34-year-old Jermaine Massey caught the footage on his phone as he was being told by a white security guard that he was trespassing on the property. Ultimately, Massey ended up being escorted out of the building by police and noted he was not given a refund for his room.

During an interview, Massey spoke on the effect of the incident, saying “I’m afraid to just do normal things now. I’m cautious about what I’m doing, and how people are perceiving that, and I shouldn’t have to think twice about where I take a phone call, or what part of the hotel I can visit.”

Since then, the security guard and hotel manager who were involved in the incident were fired after the general manager took a look at the footage.
