A black high school wrestler at the Buena Regional High School in New Jersey appeared to be embarrassed after a white referee told the young man that to participate in his match, he needed to cut his hair. The young man—Andrew Johnson was wearing a hair cover but was told it wasn’t good enough by referee Alan Maloney. The referee then proceeded to tell Johnson that he could either cut off his hair right then and there or lose the match.

Johnson went along with what Maloney said, but was very upset about the decision. Johnson ended up winning the match, but was upset and could not be consoled by his teammates.
