According to reports, the Miss Universe pageant will feature the first openly transgender contestant.

Angela Ponce, the 27-year-old who won the honor being named Miss Spain spoke to reporters while the pageant was taking place and said: “I always say: Having a vagina didn’t transform me into a woman, I am a woman, already before birth because my identity is here.”

Ponce reportedly does work with a foundation in Spain that specializes in helping trans children. When speaking about the foundation’s goal, Ponce said: “Children are born without prejudices and I think if we talk to them about diversity from a young age, we can create a new generation of human beings who are raised a lot better.”

In 2012, the pageant reversed a policy noting participants in the contest must be “naturally born” women.
