The cybersecurity policy chief of Facebook—Nathaniel Gleicher recently noted the social media platform took out over 800 fake accounts ahead of the upcoming November election. This happened to avoid voter manipulation, which Facebook reportedly became tangled up in with the 2016 election.

Facebook product manager Oscar Rodriguez said that the voter manipulation situation that occurred before the 2016 election that involved “ad farms” and fake accounts were made to mislead people into thinking the forums they were debating in were legit political discussion platforms.

Facebook reportedly began to reveal who is responsible for election-related ads on their platform, and have gone as far as shutting down accounts that are “involved in stealth influence campaigns.”
