Donald Trump gave his response with regard to Colin Kaepernick and his new deal with Nike via conservative news outlet, The Daily Caller. Trump, whose company currently owns the building of a Manhattan (NYC) Niketown, said the campaign is sending a "terrible message." He said that there was "there's no reason for it" but cited that the company's ability to make decisions freely is "what this country is all about."

Trump also made it a point to reveal that Nike is actually paying him. "Nike is a tenant of mine. They pay a lot of rent,” the president said. “But I think it’s a terrible message that they’re sending and the purpose of them doing it, maybe there’s a reason for them doing it, but I think as far as sending a message, I think it’s a terrible message and a message that shouldn’t be sent. There’s no reason for it.”

Interestingly enough, Kaepernick's message has consistently rested on raising awareness about social justice issues surrounding police brutality. Kaepernick's cause seemingly got him blackballed with his exclusion being reinforced by Trump himself. For that reason, 45 plays a huge role in Kaepernick's grievance against the NFL with many league owners and officials citing the pressure they've received from the president regarding Kap and the protests.
