Hours after her many supporters soaked in word that Alice Marie Johnson's life-sentence had been commuted and that she would be coming home, news cameras captured the moment the 63-year-old great grandmother reunited with her family.
In a video clip that has since gone viral, Johnson is seen emerging from the van that transported her out of the Aliceville, AL prison that held her behind bars for 21 years. Dressed in all white, Johnson dashes from the vehicle to convene with a group of relatives bearing flowers and open arms.
“I feel like my life is starting over again,” Johnson would later tell reporters on the scene. “I started screaming, and crying and jumping. I think I lost it for a moment.”
Johnson has expressed nothing but gratitude towards Kim Kardashian-West, referring to her as "my angel" for helping to rally a campaign that had been ongoing for her release from a stint that began when she was convicted as a first-time offender of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession in 1996. She has also shared thanks with President Trump, who heard Kim's case out and ultimately made the decision to grant Johnson clemency within a week's time.
"I am going to make you proud that you gave me this second chance in life. And I will not disappoint the American public or the world that has so much faith in me," Johnson said in remarks directed towards Trump during an interview on CNN. "It means that someone finally saw me, someone finally heard me, someone had mercy on me -- and that was President Trump, and so I'm so thankful for him and what he's done."
