Former NBA player Glen "Big Baby" Davis was officially charged with felony assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury stemming from an incident outside a nightclub in April.
Daniel Diaz, 27, alleges that he suffered great bodily injury by Davis, 32, outside of the West Hollywood nightclub Penthouse. According to TMZ, witnesses told investigators that Davis was driving erratically in the parking lot. After nearly hitting the man with his vehicle, the victim tried to confront Davis and things turned physical when Davis got out of his car. Davis allegedly picked the man up and slammed him on the concrete then left the scene. Emergency responders were called to the scene and the victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for facial fractures, a broken tooth, and broken ribs.
Davis will be arraigned Thursday on the felony assault charge, a spokesman for the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office said Wednesday. Davis faces up to seven years in prison but could likely serve much less time if he's able to plead down to lesser charge; it depends on Davis’ record and cooperation. The former NBA player, however, had another run-in with the law earlier this year.
In February, Davis was arrested at a Hampton Inn in Aberdeen, Maryland, on drug possession and distribution charges. According to police, they found 126 grams of marijuana and a briefcase containing $92,000 in cash inside Davis' room. Davis maintains his innocence and looks forward to clearing his name in court, according to his attorney.
Davis played in the NBA for nine years as part of the Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Clippers. He was a member of the Celtics team that won the NBA championship in 2008. He was set to play in the BIG3 league this summer, a league for retired NBA players founded by Ice Cube.
