Famed director Spike Lee delivered some criticism towards Kanye West after the rapper suggested slavery was “a choice.” Taking to Instagram early Tuesday, the filmmaker called out West for his “uneducated comments,” urging him to “Wake up.”

“SLAVERY...A CHOICE” Lee begins the caption. “My Brother, OUR Ancestors Did Not Choose To Be Stolen From Mother Africa. OUR Ancestors Did Not Choose To Be Ripped Of Our Religion, Language, Culture. OUR Ancestors Did Not Choose To Be Murdered, Lynched, Castrated, Raped, Burnt At The Stake, Families Sold Apart.

Our Ancestors Built This Country (On Land Stolen From The Native Americans) From The Ground Up Under The Institution Of SLAVERY. Where Is This Brother In The Picture Next To Me? I Would Not Be Surprised If OUR Ancestors Are Not Pleased With Your Uneducated Comments.

Spike Lee joins a growing list of people ticked off by the comments. Activist DeRay Mckesson suggested West take “time to reflect and learn more before you start making public statements.”

While Kanye did apologize for his remarks, Spike believes that could do little for the “harm” done. ”P.S. Your Retraction Does Not Undue The Harm You Cause To Our Beloved ANCESTORS. WAKE UP.
