Bill Gates recently warned about a pandemic disease that he fears will arise in the next ten years. Gates told Stat that a pandemic disease, either natural or created by bioterror, could kill 10 million people in one year, pointing out that the last pandemic was 100 years ago.
He said that the bioterrorism aspect scares him the most, but says that the U.S. wouldn't be the first in danger if something did arise. This week, Gates also presented a simulation by the Institute for Disease Modeling, which showed that a new flu like the pandemic that killed 50 million in 1918 would kill 30 million today.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is also offering $12 million in grants to develop a universal flu vaccination in hopes of remedying a potential flu outbreak.
