A dad's picture with his daughter and her boyfriend has caused a lot of social media controversy.

Jay Feely caught heat after sharing a photo on Twitter. The father and retired NFL kicker was excited to send his daughter off to prom. Like any protective dad, he made sure to share his ways of keeping the boundaries between the pair.

Feely took a page out of the Bad Boys 2's book and flashed a gun with the smiling teens as an extra precaution to assure the lines don't get blurred. For him, it was a joke, but viewers didn't take so kindly to the extreme measure. Many thought it to be insensitive, given the country's current state of lax gun laws.

While most weren't afraid to show their disdain, others came to the father's defense. Regardless, the influx of negative feedback caused Feely to defend himself in a single tweet.

"The prom picture I posted was obviously intended to be a joke. My Daughter has dated her boyfriend for over a year and they knew I was joking. I take gun safety seriously (the gun was not loaded and had no clip in) and I did not intend to be insensitive to that important issue."
