Texas students got an unusual homework assignment.

Great Hearts Monte Vista eighth grade class was studying history when they were given take homework by their teacher. What made this assignment unique compared to past ones is that the instructor, who remains anonymous, told the students to list the negative and positive effects of slavery. The point was to have a "balanced view of the life of slaves."

Of course, this raised the expected the tensions. Student Manu Livar admitted, "When I first read it, I thought, this was b.s." It didn't take long for his father, Roberto, to display his disgust for the assignment on Facebook.

That's when Superintendent Aaron Kindel apologized for the insensitive work and reassured that one instructor only gave it. Because the teacher instructed the students to use their textbooks and "stuff that they could think of the top off their heads," a Pearson spokesperson represented the Prentice Hall textbook company in the matter.

"The worksheet in question was not created by, endorsed, or encouraged in any way by Pearson. We do not support this point of view and strongly condemn the implication that there was any positive aspect to slavery."

Roberto explained that there had been a lot of support in favor of being against the assignment. However, he was surprised by the amount of those who defended it. The teacher has been put on leave and Kindel plans to remove the "Prentice Hall Classics: A History of the United States" books for review and meet with concerned parents.
