WBC light middleweight titleholder Jermell Charlo took to social media on Thursday night (April 19) with a series of recordings taken at a New York City gym that he believes discriminated against him for being Black.
When Jermell showed up to support twin brother Jarmall ahead of his fight on this weekend's boxing card at the Barclay's Center, he was stopped by employees at the establishment's front desk and disallowed from entering. In one video that Jermell posted, the workers can be heard telling him that they were calling the police, as he fought for the right to access the space so that he could motivate his brother. Jermell then posts the very next clip from outside to show the appearance of NYPD on the scene.
"Went to Life Time Athletic At Sky In Manhattan To Motivate My Twin While He Cutting Weight To Get That Strap Saturday And Got Treated Like We Was There To Shoot Up The Place," Jermell wrote in the caption of the last of his four snippets. The Life Time Athletic employees apparently claimed to have stopped the boxer and his party because they picked up the odor of marijuana from the group, but Jermell has insisted that none of them smoke and that he is convinced they simply weren't going to allow that many Black men in.
"They Had No Problem Taking My Cash Before My Last Two Fights When I Came Here To Train And Cut Weight But As Soon As I Roll Up With My Unk My Cousin And My Friends, 6 Black People Is Too Many," he wrote.
