For years the press has tracked Diddy and JAY-Z rising neck-and-neck for who will eventually become the culture's first billionaire. With Jay beating his Bad Boy counterpart out for the very first time with a net worth of $900 million in 2018, history may record one if not the other as bearing the distinction in time for the next publication of The Forbes Five: Hip Hop's Wealthiest Artists list. Whoever reaches the plateau is sure to be celebrated for doing so. But the achievement would be bitter sweet for legendary Public Enemy emcee Chuck D though.

“To see JAY-Z and Puffy have a playful argument about who’s going to be the top of Forbes, I look at my peer group and they’re just trying to get by. Look at a guy like Masta Ace who’s just trying to continue his art and feed his family, I just wish the distribution is a little less painful," Chuck is quoted as having said during a recent interview with HipHopDX.

Chuck reportedly went on to recount a conversation he had with DJ Premier about how much he's freely contributed to the very platform that brought men like Dr. Dre, Eminem, Drake, Diddy, and Jay their fortune. While their abundance might be all to the good, the pioneering rapper said he wished there was more balance in terms of how some of the elders are rewarded and get to benefit.

"JAY-Z and Puffy arguing about who has most money — something’s wrong with that," HipHopDX reported Chuck as saying. "How many jobs have you created? Who are you paying and what are you doing for it? It all came out from the sacrifices we made for you.”

While Jay and Diddy may have motivated one another with some friendly competition along the way, they've always acknowledged one another's success and have long gotten along in the public eye. Upon learning that he had finally been outdone when Forbes announced its latest list, he issued a statement that was filled with blessings for his Roc Nation counterpart, and with hopes that more Black entrepreneurs might work toward a common end.

"I feel so blessed that we are all seeing eye to eye! It’s time for us to work for the betterment of our people! We will educate! We will share information! No sucker s**t allowed! We will show our people how together all of us have to build BLACK GENERATIONAL WEALTH! We all WE GOT! #theblackrenaissance HAS BEGUN!!! And you’re all invited. TOGETHER WE RISE!!!" he can be recalled stating.
