DMX was sentenced to one year in prison for tax evasion on Wednesday, March 28. The New York rapper pled guilty to dodging $1.7 million in taxes, and was handed his sentence by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan.

Prosecutors argued that DMX lived a cash-only lifestyle for years after depositing royalty checks into accounts that belonged to his manager, his ex-wife, and the mother of one of his children.

Judge Rakoff said that he believed that DMX was a good man and gave him less than the 5-years that prosecutors were seeking, but added that “It cannot go unpunished.”
