Netflix has become an entertainment powerhouse. Over the years, the streaming platform has transformed into a major content creator. Despite the fact that Netflix’s content has earned Oscar nominations, including Mary J. Blige for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Mudbound, legendary director Steven Spielberg believes that films produced by the platform shouldn’t be recognized at the Academy Awards.

During an interview with ITV News, Spielberg spoke about his upcoming film Ready Player One. As the conversation progressed, Spielberg offered his feelings on the growing amount of streaming platforms gaining more traction in the movie industry.

"Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie," Spielberg said, before weighing in on whether films by streaming platforms deserve Oscar noms. "You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar… I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination."

While he understands that the media is changing due to new technology and increasing demand for media, Spielberg states that Hollywood studios are less likely to take chances on new stories, claiming studios are only favoring established franchises.

"The difference today is that a lot of studios would rather just make branded, tentpole, guaranteed box office hits from their inventory of branded, successful movies than take chances on smaller films,” Spielberg said. ”And those smaller films that studios used to make routinely are now going to Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix."
