The Harris County (Texas) District Attorney’s office announced earlier this afternoon that Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett was indicted by a grand jury today on a felony charge of "injury of the elderly." The incident allegedly took place on Feb. 5, 2017, at Super Bowl 51 in Houston.

According to the office’s statement, Bennett pushed past security, which included a 66-year-old paraplegic stadium employee, as he ran onto the field to celebrate the Patriots’ win with his brother Martellus, a tight end for New England. A warrant has been issued for Michael’s arrest.

Bennett is accused of ignoring instructions from multiple security guards, who told him to use a different access point to get onto the field. Prosecutors say he instead, pushed through the crowd and injured a paraplegic security guard. According to Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg’s office, the injury of the elderly charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Michael Bennett has been one of the most vocal athletes in sports when it comes to speaking out against police brutality over the last few years. Many people believe the charges are a direct result of him choosing to talk about these issues. The length of time between the incident and the charge, as well as the lack of video evidence, makes the entire situation questionable.
