Officer Mohamed Noor mistakenly shot and killed Justine Ruszczyk Damond last year in Minneapolis. Damond, who was engaged and took her fiance's last name early, called 911 after she heard what she thought was a rape taking place. Police arrived on the scene, and Damond approached the squad car. Officer Noor claimed that he heard a loud noise, and was shocked by Damond's sudden appearance. He then shot out of the driver side window from the passenger side. His shot killed the 40-year-old. Neither Officer Noor or his partner's body cams were turned on during the shooting. Neither was the squad car's camera.

According to NBC News, Officer Noor was indicted on Tuesday and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the shooting. His bail is set at $500,000. Damond's family back in her home country of Australia and her fiancé Don released a statement following the indictment.

"While we waited over eight months to come to this point, we are pleased with the way a grand jury and County Attorney Mike Freeman appear to have been diligent and thorough in investigating and ultimately determining that these charges are justified," they stated.

When asked why the indictment took so long, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman stated that police refused to cooperate with the investigation. He claims that he had to "subpoena them to testify before a grand jury."
