Shaquille O’Neal became the latest figure to offer a proposal to curbing gun violence in the wake of the Douglas High school shooting which left 17 people. O’Neal, who lives a few miles away from Parkland, Fla., believes that banning guns is not the answer when its come to stopping school shootings but more law enforcement.
"The only problem with that is, there's 15 million of 'em out there already on the streets,” Shaq told WABC Radio’s Curtis and Cosby show on Tuesday. “And then another problem is if you ban 'em, then you gonna create an underground market, and the gun collectors, you know, it's gonna become more valuable.”
O’Neal went to on to state his belief that most people would not turn in their weapons should a law pass banning guns, suggesting that such a move would open a profitable black market. “Cause once you ban 'em, now they're going to become a collectors' item” Shaq explained “And you're going to have people underground and they were $2,000… I'll give you $9,000 for that gun.”
O’Neal, who joined many law enforcement agencies, continued his remarks advocating for the government to place police officers in all schools to stop the violence. “The government should give law enforcement more money. Give more money, you recruit more people and the guys that are not ready to go on the streets, you put them in front of the schools,” Shaq explained. “You put ’em in front of the schools; you put ’em behind the schools, you put ’em inside the schools.”
