A highly disturbing video has surfaced of a man at a hospital in India having to use his own severed foot as a pillow after doctors had amputated it.

Indian authorities have suspended two doctors and launched an investigation into how the incident could have occurred, a hospital official announced Sunday.

"We have set up a four-member committee to find out who put the severed leg under the patient's head," said Sadhna Kaushik, principal of the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College and Hospital in Jhansi.

"Strict action will be taken if our staff is found at fault."

The footage of the incident was shot at the government-run hospital in Uttar Pradesh where a man identified as 28-year-old Ghanshyam was taken after being seriously injured in a bus crash.

While speaking with local television news network NDTV, the young man's relatives said they pleaded with hospital staff to supply Ghanshyam, who goes by one name, with a proper pillow.

"When we reached the hospital, we saw his leg being used as a headrest," Janaki Prasad, a relative, told the network. "I repeatedly asked the doctors to intervene but they refused," he added.

Relatives eventually brought Ghanshyam a proper pillow purchased at a local market.
